Garden weeds fall into two broad categories: annual weeds which appear during the growing season from the previous year’s seeds and perennial weeds which are plants that establish and grow stronger each season. Annual weeds are relatively easy to control by hoeing, mulching in early spring or by applying chemical weed killers during the growing season.

Perennial weeds such as brambles, nettles, bindweed, ground elder, horse tail and Japanese knotweed are much more difficult to control. These weeds cannot be entirelycontrolled by digging as roots are often left in the ground causing vigorous new plants to appear. Eradication of these weeds can only be achieved by applying chemical weed killers several times during the growing season.

Modern systemic weed killers are applied to plants when they are in leaf and are ingested by the plant so that every part of the plant is killed.
